Mortality (The Hitchhiker Strain #1) by Kellie Sheridan
Published: March 19th 2013
After surviving a deadly plague outbreak, sixteen-year-old Savannah thought she had lived through the very worst of human history. There was no way to know that the miracle vaccine would put everyone at risk for a fate worse than un-death. Now, two very different kinds of infected walk the Earth, intent on nothing but feeding and destroying what little remains of civilization. When the inoculated are bitten, infection means watching on in silent horror as self-control disappears and the idea of feasting on loved ones becomes increasingly hard to ignore. Starving and forced to live inside of the abandoned high school, all Savannah wants is the chance to fight back. When a strange boy arrives with a plan to set everything right, she gets her chance. Meeting Cole changes everything. Mere survival will never be enough.
I saw this a while back and thought it sounds good, I mean it has zombies, how could I go wrong. The synopsis talks about two different types of zombie, so I was curious as to what the difference is. So, I was excited when I received this from the author and gave it a go and I certainly was not disappointed. Savannah is the main character, she is just one of about 200 or so that have held been held up in the local High School after the zombies took out most of their families. I have to say I liked Savannah, she was head strong and snarky. She didn’t always make good decision and took chances that were dangerous, but she did what she thought was helping the people she lived with. She has a group of friends that were with her majority of the time. They all seemed to be pretty close. Savannah meets Cole while trying to hide in the woods, he is mysterious and doesn’t seem like the type to be out in this environment at all. He isn’t just nobody kids though. He is searching from some of his family. But he needs her help doing do. There is an attraction between them and watching Savannah and Cole fight it was fun to read. The world building was great. There were zombie attacks and action through out. The kids find themselves in a situation that is dyer and learn that is more people out there. There are things going on that they weren’t even aware of. Training, and experiments to find a cure. There are two kinds of zombie. The ones that were infected before the apocalypse and the ones who were infected after being vaccinated. There were two stories, and at first I wasn’t sure why and where the one story was going. I soon understood why and how the two stories some together. Mortality has a take of zombies that I really enjoyed. It was different and from the beginning, I was hooked and wanted to more about them. The ending left room for the next book and it is one that I will most certainly pick up. If you like zombies and action, this is a great one.

Great review. This cover is kind of creepy, but the books sounds like it could be good.
Love the sound of this one! I love me a good zombie novel and this one sounds super creepy. I hadn’t heard of it before so thanks for bringing it to my attention! Also, that cover is wicked!
I did the cover reveal for this and have worked with Kelly before and while I’m not the biggest zombie fan this is one I think I will have to give a read one of these days. I really love the cover!
Creepy cover! I wonder how the two stories intertwine with one another. Great review, Jenea!
I remember seeing this one awhile ago and loving that cover! I haven’t read many zombie books, but I like good world building!
There seems to be a lot of zombie books out lately. I haven’t heard of this one before, but it sounds unique. Glad you enjoyed it.
I’m not sure about this one just because I’m not really a fan of zombie books…saying that, this one does look really interesting and I appreciate that it has a lot of action, which is always fun to imagine.
Great review. I really enjoyed this book too. Lots of action and I liked the characters.
